Acupuncture for digestive health

Digestive issues can be uncomfortable, persistent and sometimes hard to pin down. Whether symptoms come and go or have been ongoing for a while, treatment is shaped around your overall health, not just digestion in isolation.

What may be bringing you here

Discomfort that keeps returning

Symptoms may come and go, flare unexpectedly or never feel fully resolved.

Digestion affected by stress

Periods of stress or overwhelm can often affect digestion, appetite and physical comfort.

Feeling unsettled in your body

Bloating, discomfort or digestive changes can start affecting confidence, energy and day-to-day life.

When digestion isn’t settling

Digestive symptoms don’t always follow a clear pattern. You might notice discomfort after eating, bloating that builds through the day, reflux, nausea, or ongoing changes that don’t quite resolve.

These issues are often linked with other parts of your health, including stress, sleep, energy and hormonal patterns. Treatment takes a wider view, looking at how everything fits together rather than focusing on one symptom alone.

Common reasons people seek support

Everyday digestive concerns

  • Bloating or discomfort after eating
  • Irregular digestion
  • Changes in appetite
  • Nausea or reflux

Ongoing digestive symptoms

  • IBS-type symptoms
  • Ongoing or recurring digestive discomfort

Digestive health in the wider picture

  • Digestive issues linked to stress
  • Digestive symptoms alongside fatigue, hormonal change or chronic health issues

How acupuncture may help

Acupuncture is often used to support the digestive system as part of a wider approach to health.

Treatment may help to:

  • reduce tension that can affect digestion
  • support more regular digestive patterns
  • ease discomfort and bloating
  • support the nervous system and stress response
  • improve overall sense of balance in the body

Sessions are calm and unhurried, with time to talk through your symptoms as well as time to rest during treatment.

Looking beyond digestion

Digestive symptoms are often influenced by other factors, including stress, routine, hormonal change, energy levels and general health.

Rather than isolating digestion as a separate issue, treatment considers how your body is functioning overall, and adapts over time as things shift.

What a treatment plan looks like

Your first appointment

Your first appointment is a detailed health consultation and includes a detailed discussion of your digestive history, general health, lifestyle and any medical diagnoses. I will ask about symptoms, stress levels, sleep and diet to build a complete picture. This allows me to create a personalised treatment plan tailored specifically to you.

Follow-up treatments

Treatments are usually weekly or fortnightly to begin with, depending on the nature and severity of your symptoms. Each session lasts approximately 60 minutes. During this phase, we focus on regulating digestion, reducing discomfort and supporting your nervous system.

Ongoing guidance

Support continues beyond acupuncture. Drawing on the principles of yang sheng - the Chinese medicine philosophy of “nourishing life” - I offer practical and thoughtful lifestyle guidance tailored to you. I also work with a trusted network of fellow acupuncturists and nutritionists, whom I can consult or refer to when appropriate.

When digestion and stress overlap

Many people notice that digestion changes during periods of stress, poor sleep, fatigue or emotional strain.

Treatment looks at this relationship carefully, supporting digestion while also considering the wider patterns that may be keeping symptoms active.

What clients say

I have always been very nervous about acupuncture but knew it would really help me with my nervous and digestive system. Saskia has been the most calm and skillful practitioner that I could wish for on my acupuncture journey. She tailors every session to what I might need in that moment, and I couldn’t be more grateful for her. Would not hesitate to recommend her as an acupuncturist in Blackheath.
